THANKS TO ALL WHO ATTENDED!

Thank you!

Another year has passed; another Soapfest has come and gone. In the face of adversity with cancelled shows, rough economic times, and last minute actor cancellations we all pulled together to produce another successful charity event.

Each year we thank over 100 individuals and organizations who donate to this wonderful cause – whether it be their talent, time, money, food, gift certificates, housing, vehicles, etc. This event really could not happen without the generosity we receive over the months leading up to the event. All of us at Soapfest feel very, very privileged to be a part of a community that pulls together as the Soapfest cogs, to make this wheel turn. We want you to know that your contribution really has made a significant difference and has been wholeheartedly appreciated.

We had 15 actors who donated their time. They flew in from New York and LA and added so much to this weekend. We had 50 volunteers who came from England to Illinois to Idaho to right here on Marco Island. We had local (and not so local) significant financial donations. We had donations from so many wonderful restaurants on the Island. We had local businesses and individuals donate gift certificates and various other auction items. Every corner we turned where there was a “no”, it seemed to be matched by a big hearted “yes”. It has not been easy but the outcome has been well worth the hard work – a fun event with lots of fine memories culminating in local children benefiting. Whether you’re into the Soaps or not you have supported a very, very worthwhile cause – on behalf of the children – we Thank You.

WHERE ARE OUR SOAPS GOING???

First it was Guiding Light, then As The World Turns and now All My Children and One Life to Live. Daytime fans just can’t catch a break. Moving in are more talk shows and more reality shows. Do we really need more of that junk? And let’s not insult us by announcing to the world that it’s due to low ratings. Come on, we aren’t stupid and we aren’t buying it. It’s about the money and it always will be. Which leads me to the question of how did these shows survive lean times in the past 50 - 60 years? We went through bad economic times in the past. How many of us got through most of it by losing ourselves in our stories. So what’s happened since? They haven’t lost the fans – they are loyal as ever. And with the Tivo and DVR’s available to us I believe there are more viewers now than ever before. So I ask again –what has changed?

I guess it could be that with the addition of DVR’s we aren’t watching the commercials and the advertisers aren’t happy. Or can it be that the unions have so much power that the costs of overhead have gone out of control. Or maybe it’s someone at the network with way too much power. Or maybe it was us, the fans, complaining to the networks when things didn’t go the way we wanted and the network “powers-that-be” just got sick of us.

We are sorry to report that Ellen Dolan, J. R. Martinez, Jon Prescott, Billy Magnussen, Susan Haskell and Thorsten Kaye will not be appearing at this years Soapfest event due to work schedule conflicts and family commitments. All of us at Soapfest are extremely disappointed to lose them this year but these changes are completely out of our control. We are forever grateful for their continued support and we thank them for helping us raise many dollars for kids with special needs. All the actors send their apologies to their fans and we hope they will be back again next year.

With all this said - the show must go on. All of us at Soapfest have spent many months planning for this event and are committed to bringing you another quality, fun weekend event, and most importantly the charities are counting on us.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to seeing you in a couple weeks.

Sunday, May 15th – 7:30PM

TOGETHER AGAIN!!!

A play reading starring Tom Pelphrey and Stephanie Gatschet

Apothecary Theatre Company presents an evening of theater with two talented soap opera stars, Guiding Light's Tom Pelphrey and All My Children's Stephanie Gatschet, onstage together for the first time to read two One-Act plays: FAIR ROSAMUND AND HER MURDERER, a grown-up fairy tale of forbidden love, and POST-IT'S: NOTES ON A MARRIAGE, a history of a couple's attempt to stay in touch no matter how far they stray.

Continuing in the tradition of Apothecary's mission to bring unknown plays to a new audience, this one time performance includes two plays about two couples, finding their way to love through hilarity and heartbreak- it is a night of theater bringing together two talented artists to celebrate the relationships we find ourselves living, whether we expected them or not, and the compromises we make to live happily ever after.

Come on out and join us for this very special event celebrating theater at the Rose History Auditorium, located at the Marco Island Historical Museum, 180 S. Heathwood Drive. We are thrilled to include once again an amazing play reading in this year’s festivities. It’s sure to be a night you won’t soon forget and the perfect ending to a great weekend. Tickets are $50 and include a cocktail reception with the actors at Cathy O'Clarkes Irish Pub, 591 S Collier Blvd.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Apothecary Theatre Co, a non-profit organization.
